Twenty pilot projects over the past three years, and a collaboration with 72 partner, with the ultimate goal of reducing emissions of carbon dioxide. This is the Smart City Amsterdam (AMS) program, which is developed by the non-profit public organization AIM (Amsterdam Innovation Motor), leaded by Baron. Two are the major objectives: facilitate bottom-up innovation, and gather the investments that will follow in the coming years.

Amsterdam Smart City model is very clear: in the middle there are the three founding partners, namely Alliander, KPN and Amsterdam, all of which have long-term economic interests (infrastructure use) and the will to overcome city key issues. Through AMS they collaborate with other entities: strategic partners in some thematic domains (companies like Philips, Cisco, IBM, Accenture) and with small and medium-sized enterprises at project level. This generates a differentiation between the partners with long-term objectives (partner of infrastructure), medium term (strategic partners), and short term as SMEs.  The Public administration support is essential: produces "trust", open data, long-term commitment, policies and leadership.

Ger Baron Cluster Manager - Amsterdam Innovation Motor Biografia

Ger Baron has been working on public-private partnerships for the last 5 years for the Amsterdam Innovation Motor. Mostly in the Metropolitan Area of Amsterdam. He has a passion for enabling innovation that increases the quality of life and makes society more resilient. Within the last years he has been responsible for starting up programs like Amsterdam Smart City and Health-Lab. The philosophy behind this activities is that innovation is enabled by opening up infrastructures and support people with great ideas to make them happen. From this perspective Ger is active in working groups of Euro cities, the Connected Urban Development-initiative and the Intelligent Cities Network. Ger is also responsible for the executing of several projects around Living Labs, Innovative Procurement and Roadmaps for Smart Cities.

For the last years Ger has been part of the international Smart City-community acting, being a speaker at conferences all over the world or being an advisor to governmental organizations. Ger is convinced that the Third Industrial Revolution is currently happening and within the ambitions of Connected Village (www.connectedvillage.org) he wants to make sure that opportunities the TIR is generating are turned into tangible effects. Technology is not the problem according to him - it is the change in will and especially the will to break down traditional stakeholder and business models.
